September 3, 2010
On the evening of August 14, the Georgia 4-H Foundation
and the Georgia 4-H Advisory Committee hosted the 2010
4-H Gala. This is the fourth Georgia 4-H Gala which
honors an individual with the 4-H Lifetime Achievement
Award. This year’s recipient was Dr. M. K. “Curly”
Cook, whose contributions to the Junior Livestock Program
and animal agriculture in Georgia have meant much to
the success of Georgia 4-H over the past years. We
congratulate Dr. Cook and his family upon receiving
this award. His acceptance comments can be viewed by

The Honorable David Ralston, Speaker of the Georgia
House of Representatives, served as honorary chair
for the evening. Speaker Ralston shared his 4-H experiences
growing up in Gilmer County and pledged to continue
his support of the Georgia 4-H program into the future.
We appreciate Speaker Ralston’s serving as honorary
chair and his support of the Georgia 4-H program. Click

The Gala Committee was chaired by Anne Woolf Sapp
and Diane Brown Vaughan, who provided leadership to
the
2010
Georgia 4-H Gala Committee and raised over $175,000
in support of the Georgia 4-H program. We appreciate
the support of all the individuals and corporations
who pledged financial support as well as in-kind gifts
and time to make our evening a great success. If you
were not able to attend the Gala, please view the videos
that were shown during the evening which are available
on the Georgia
4-H YouTube channel.
The evening reinforced that there is no doubt that
Georgia 4-H has influenced the lives of thousands of
Georgians in helping to improve the quality of life
in our great state. Thanks again to all those who made
the 2010 Georgia 4-H Gala a success.
4-H’ers have headed back to school and continue to
be active in 4-H educational programs. The State
4-H Land Judging Contest was held in Tifton, Georgia on
August 21. The Coweta County team consisting of Emily
Brinton, Whitney Kirkpatrick, John Mooney, and Tori
Butcher was the state winning senior team. Emily Brinton
was also the high individual. Congratulations to these
state winners. We wish the Coweta County 4-H Land Judging
team good luck when they travel to Oklahoma City in
the spring of 2011 for the National 4-H Land Judging
Contest.
The Georgia 4-H performing arts group Clovers
and Company has been preparing their show for the 2010-2011
program year. This past Sunday afternoon, I had the
opportunity to preview the new show which will debut
at the Georgia
Youth Summit at Rock Eagle 4-H Center
on Sunday evening, September 12. This wonderful group
of young people has been a great ambassador program
for Georgia 4-H for nearly 30 years.
Finally, on Saturday, September 11, 2010, we will
dedicate two new cabins
at Rock Eagle 4-H Center, as
well as re-dedicate the Gas Building at Rock Eagle.
We invite everyone to attend these dedications as we
honor Kroger and the Georgia Development Authority
for providing funds for the construction of the two
new cabins. We also thank the Georgia Propane Gas Association
for their efforts in helping us renovate the Gas Building
at Rock Eagle.
Thanks for your continued support. Call your County
Extension Office and volunteer to help a 4-H’er or
send funds to support project achievement, camp or
college scholarships for local 4-H’ers during the coming
year.
Until next time, continue “To Make The Best Better.”
Sincerely,
