Athens , GA - The ultimate college town, was taken over the weekend of April 12-13 by Georgia 4-H! The University of Georgia Collegiate 4-H Club hosted over 120 4-H'ers, volunteers, and leaders who attended “Weekend in the Classic City : Reality Check 2008.” Held at the Student Learning Center, 4-H members spent the weekend becoming more prepared for college life through attending college prep informational sessions and listening to guest speakers such as Miss UGA, Liza Pitts and National 4-H Board of Trustees Member, Nekeisha Randall. The delegates also interacted with Group Leaders who represented collegiate 4-H from over 14 colleges and universities from across Georgia.
Saturday began with pictures featuring the beloved UGA mascot Hairy Dawg. Students then sped off to the Amazing Campus Race, during which 4-H'ers discovered historical facts and points of significant interest on UGA's campus. They also attended informational sessions hosted by College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Ambassadors on “Facebook Safety” and “Professional Networking.”4-H'ers learned more about Georgia colleges and universities through an informative college fair, participated in a dorm tour, dined at the East Campus Village Summit, and attended the UGA/Kentucky baseball game. The day ended with recreation at the East Campus Fireside Lounge.
The Sunday program continued with a workshop hosted by the UGA Office of Admissions informing students about completing a college application, housing, academic success, and college costs. The students enjoyed a live performance from “The Accidentals” a male accapella vocal group and also listened to songs by country music up and comer Hannah Dasher. Hannah is former 4-H'er and student in the UGA Music Business Program. She was joined by Bruce Birch, Music Business Professor, and country music award winning song writer. Guest speakers also included Miss UGA, Liza Pitts, and UGA Football Star, Roderick Battle. Nekeisha Randall, College of Ag Ambassador and National 4-H Board of Trustees Member served as the keynote speaker. Nekeisha encouraged students to choose a college and an academic experience that would best fit their goals, allowing 4-H to enable them to reach their dreams.
Steven Dasher , 4-H'er from Tattnall County and Junior at the University of Georgia served as Conference Chairman. Over 30 collegiate 4-H'ers participated in planning and conducting the event, led by the State of Georgia Collegiate 4-H Club Advisor, Lauren Ledbetter . “Weekend in the Classic City : Reality Check 2008” empowered Georgia 4-H'ers to be prepared for life after high school! |
