We are pleased to announce that Georgia 4-H has been selected as a Lead Agency for the 2008 Global Youth Service Day, April 25 - 27, 2008.
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is an international initiative designed to engage youth all over the world in service and/or service learning projects on the same weekend, April 25-27, 2008.
The projects do NOT have to have a global focus. They should be focused on local issues and involve youth in the planning and organizing as well as reflecting on the projects afterwards. Ideally, all projects will include a service learning component.
GYSD organizers and the State 4-H Office will assist participatint counties by providing promotional materials, project development resources and information and assistance on project grant opportunities. How can County 4-H Clubs get involved?
In order to participate in GYSD, all you need to do is schedule a local community service project for the weekend of April 25th - 28th , 2008.
Why should County 4-H Clubs get involved?
This activity fits perfectly into 4-H's national initiative for Civic Engagement and can build upon or compliment other 4-H programs including Project Citizen, Leadership in Action and Chevron Community Pride Grants.
This is a great opportunity to be a part of a national/international collaboration. You will receive PSA templates as well as other assistance from Youth Service America in publicizing your efforts.
What is expected of participating counties?
If april 25th - 27th is a time frame that would work for your county, all that would be asked is that you provide very brief, bi-monthly updates to Jeff Buckley on the progress of your projects.
As a lead agency, it is our goal to involve at least 10 organizations (counties) and a total of 600 volunteers in community service projects on the weekend of April 25 - 27. At least some portion of the project should take place during this three day stretch.
