FOOD,FOOD,AND MORE FOOD!!!!
                               FOOD  FARE

The purpose of this project is to help you learn how to use the Food Guide Pyramid to plan meals to
meet your daily food needs.  The meals you plan should include one-dish meals which are nutritious
and low-cost.

In this project you will plan seven days of meals, including snacks, that combine  to meet your daily
food needs.  You will also prepare a nutritious, low-cost, one-dish meal.   A one-dish meal, often
referred to as a main dish casserole, is a mixture of several foods and usually contains some type of
starch (rice, pasta, or potatoes), vegetables and /or fruits, and lean protein foods like meat, fish,
poultry, beans or lowfat cheese or milk products.

The casserole should be prepared with the Food Guide Pyramid in mind:  use a good supply of grains,
starches and fruits or vegetables, moderate amounts of protein, and only small amounts of fat, salt and
sugar.   Protein should be one of the primary nutrients provided by this main dish meal.  Your dish
should be prepared using recommended food safety and sanitation procedures, as well as using
correct food preparation skills.  You will be expected to practice good organizational and management
skills while preparing your dish in an assigned kitchen setting.  You will also be expected to share your
knowledge of and experiences in nutrition, meal planning and food preparation in discussion with the
judges.
