Citizenship Washington Focus

July 11-18, 2009 – Washington , D.C.

2009 Citizenship Washington Focus Application

2009 Citizenship Washington Focus Donor/Sponsor Letter

Applications and Deposits Due March 17th, 2009

In order to reduce travel costs, we are taking a smaller bus.

Therefore slots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.

The Georgia 4-H delegation will be attending Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) from July 11th to July 18th, 2009.

Citizenship Washington Focus is a week-long civic course where delegates explore our government through educational field trips, learning exercises and active discussions. The experience includes a visit to the Arlington Cemetery , a night view of Washington , a field trip to Mount Vernon , a visit to several memorials, a cultural heritage experience with a trip to a dinner theatre, and many other fun-filled activities including tours at Capitol Hill and congressional visits. This is truly an excellent opportunity and experience for senior 4-H members.

We will depart from a central location in the Macon area on Saturday, July 11 with other potential stops depending on the location of applicants. The group is scheduled to arrive at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase , MD around 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 12. The return trip will begin early Saturday morning July 18. Our expected return to a pre-determined location(s) will be in the late afternoon-early evening. Delegates will be housed 3 to 4 in a room with a private bath at the National 4-H Center. The cost for members to take part in this great experience and adventure is $1,205.00 . This amount includes an estimated $49.00 that each delegate will need to carry with them to purchase meals in route and during certain venues while touring in the D.C. area.

Application deadline is March 17, 2009 . A $150.00 non-refundable deposit is required along with the application to be considered. Deposits will only be returned if a member does not make the quota due to space availability. Checks should be made payable to the Georgia 4-H Foundation . Applicants will be notified in Mid-April whether or not their application(s) has/have made the quota. The fee balance is due by May 4 . Again! Please note that 4-H'ers will be expected to carry money for extra meals in route (approximately $49). Those who have previously attended CWF may also apply and have the opportunity to be selected to return again – but, priority will be given to the number of first time applicants and space availability.

The cost to delegates may be handled in several ways: (1) the delegate pays full cost; (2) full cost paid by a county donor; or, (3) the delegate pays a part and a donor pays part of the cost. Also, consider that some civic groups in the county may agree to pay a portion of the cost in return for the delegate giving a presentation on their trip's highlights. They may also consider asking for a donation to cover a specific portion – i.e., registration, transportation, meals, etc. Delegates may find the attached “sample letter” helpful in writing to potential donors.

We're certainly looking forward to having an excellent group of 4-H'ers represent Georgia at this year's Citizenship/Washington Focus. Should you have any questions, please give me a call at (478)751-6338, or email me at roycelj@uga.edu.
